- Scientists from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have selected Mons Mouton as the landing site for Chandrayaan-4, India’s first lunar sample return mission. This 6,000-meter-high mountain near the Moon’s South Pole has a flat peak suitable for safe landing. Located in the South Circumpolar Region and named after NASA mathematician Melba Roy Mouton, it sits on the rim of the Moon’s oldest and largest impact basin, the South Pole–Aitken basin. The area also benefits from long-duration sunlight and clear radio communication with Earth.
